Illuminating Zambia’s Green Energy Future: Insights from the Zambia Smart PV & BESS Summit 2024
On November 15th, Lusaka played host to the “Lighting Up a Greener Zambia – Zambia Scenario-based Smart PV & BESS Summit 2024”, co-organized by LONGi, PowerChina, and Huawei. The high-profile event welcomed notable guests, including Mr. Peter Mumba, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy of Zambia, and Mr. Albert Halwampa, Director General of the Zambia Development Agency, who delivered keynote addresses highlighting Zambia’s green energy ambitions.
The summit facilitated dynamic discussions among industry leaders from ZESCO Limited, LONGi, PowerChina, Huawei, and the First National Bank of Zambia. Topics spanned Zambia’s national net-metering plan, advanced crystalline silicon modules with HPBC2.0 technology, PV and BESS multi-scenario applications, FusionSolar intelligent solutions, and green financing strategies. These exchanges fostered vibrant debates, showcasing Zambia’s readiness to embrace innovative energy solutions.
Collaborative Commitments and Government Support
During his speech, Mr. Halwampa underscored the synergy of technological excellence brought by PowerChina, LONGi, and Huawei. He emphasized Zambia’s commitment to fostering a supportive policy environment for foreign enterprises with cutting-edge expertise. In a pivotal moment, the three companies signed a cooperation framework agreement, reaffirming their joint dedication to advancing Zambia’s green energy agenda. This collaboration epitomizes the proactive efforts of Chinese enterprises to contribute to global sustainability.
LONGi’s HPBC2.0: A New Benchmark in Solar Technology
LONGi’s innovative HPBC2.0 technology took center stage, drawing widespread acclaim. The company showcased its latest crystalline silicon module, which boasts a record-breaking efficiency of 25.4%, highlighting its leadership in photovoltaic innovation.
Technical experts introduced tailored solutions for diverse applications, such as the Hi-MO 9 bifacial module for large-scale power stations and the Hi-MO X10 for distributed solar systems. Both products are designed with HPBC2.0 technology, optimizing power generation efficiency and lowering the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). These advancements earned high praise from local stakeholders, culminating in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the deployment of 12MW of new solar products.
Accelerating Zambia’s Energy Goals
Addressing Zambia’s energy priorities, Mr. Peter Mumba highlighted the nation’s ambitious target of achieving 100% electricity access by 2030, with 44% connected to the grid and 56% via off-grid solar solutions. Solar and energy storage technologies are critical to meeting these goals. To attract investments, the government has introduced a range of incentives, including tax exemptions for solar energy projects.
A Packed Summit with Far-reaching Impact
The summit, attended by over 150 representatives from the Zambian government, local enterprises, and media, fostered an atmosphere of collaboration and innovation. It underscored Zambia’s commitment to practical cooperation in solar and energy storage projects, positioning the nation as a green energy pioneer in Africa.
LONGi, PowerChina, and Huawei reiterated their shared vision of delivering cutting-edge solar solutions tailored to Zambia’s needs. Guided by the mission of “Making the best of solar energy to build a green world,” LONGi aims to be at the forefront of Zambia’s transition toward a sustainable energy future.
This summit marks a significant milestone in Zambia’s journey toward green energy, bringing together global expertise and local ambition to illuminate a brighter, greener tomorrow.
