Morocco’s Solar Market Set for Growth: SolarPower Europe Report Highlights Key Investment Prospects

A new report from SolarPower Europe, Morocco: Solar Investment Opportunities, highlights the country’s booming solar sector and the potential for international investors to capitalize on its rapid expansion.

Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director-General of DG ENER at the European Commission, emphasized Morocco’s leadership in renewable energy, with a target of 52% renewable electricity capacity by 2030—a goal in which solar energy plays a central role. She described the report as a strategic roadmap for investors, businesses, and policymakers.

Gustavo Fernandes, Head of Africa and International at Voltalia and Chair of SolarPower Europe’s Global Markets Workstream, underscored Morocco’s strong solar potential and the importance of policy reforms to unlock further growth.

Similarly, Fatima Zahra El Khalifa, Director General of Cluster EnR, highlighted Morocco’s position as a regional energy hub and stressed the role of strategic investments in accelerating the country’s energy transition.

With solar capacity expanding, Morocco is projected to reach 2.27 GW of installed solar power by 2027 and 2.97 GW by 2028, according to the report’s medium-growth scenario. Benjamin Clarke, Global Markets Manager at SolarPower Europe, expressed confidence in Morocco’s ability to attract investment and accelerate its renewable energy ambitions.

Sonia Dunlop, CEO of the Global Solar Council, pointed to Morocco’s green hydrogen strategy, strong regulations, and rising electricity demand as factors that will lower solar costs and attract further investment. The country is expected to add 2.2 GW of new solar capacity by 2028, reinforcing its status as a key player in the global solar market.

The report is the 15th edition in SolarPower Europe’s Global Market Reports series, covering countries such as Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, India, Kazakhstan, Latin America, the Middle East, Mozambique, Myanmar, Oman, Senegal, Tunisia, and Vietnam.

As Morocco continues its renewable energy expansion, the solar sector presents a wealth of opportunities for investors looking to support sustainable development while achieving strong financial returns.
