Nigeria Launches Renewed Hope Solarization Project to Power Universities and Hospitals

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has launched the Renewed Hope Solarization Project, a strategic initiative aimed at boosting clean energy access across the country’s key educational and healthcare institutions.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, ECN Director General and CEO, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, announced that each of Nigeria’s 37 federal universities—including those in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory—will receive a dedicated 2-megawatt renewable energy system. This effort is expected to significantly enhance energy reliability on university campuses, aligning with national goals to strengthen Nigeria’s energy resilience and sustainability.

The project will also extend to the healthcare sector, with the installation of 2-megawatt solar hybrid systems in 37 tertiary hospitals nationwide. These systems are designed to provide consistent and eco-friendly power, improving service delivery and reducing the sector’s dependence on fossil fuels—a key move toward fortifying the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

Addressing public concerns regarding the ₦10 billion allocation for solar electrification at the Presidential Villa, Dr. Abdullahi defended the investment as part of a broader national strategy. He emphasized that the project reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for energy security and economic modernization.

“This initiative is not just about powering buildings—it’s about powering progress,” Dr. Abdullahi stated. “From universities to hospitals, our focus is on stabilizing electricity supply, expanding prepaid metering, and accelerating Nigeria’s journey toward sustainable development.”

The Renewed Hope Solarization Project is expected to play a central role in Nigeria’s clean energy transition while supporting the nation’s long-term infrastructure and social development goals.
