Senegal’s growing prominence in Africa’s energy sector will take center stage at African Energy Week (AEW) 2025, with Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines, Birame Soulèye Diop, confirming his attendance. His participation reflects the country’s commitment to investment-driven growth across oil, gas, and renewables, underpinned by strong policy and regulatory reforms.
Following its debut as an oil producer in 2024, Senegal exceeded expectations at the Sangomar offshore field, which yielded 16.9 million barrels—well above the projected 11.7 million. In early 2025, 650,000 barrels were refined locally, boosting energy independence and opening doors for downstream investment.
In the gas sector, BP’s Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 LNG project achieved first gas in January 2025, set to deliver 2.3 million tonnes annually. The Yakaar-Teranga project is also advancing toward a final investment decision, with aims to serve both domestic and export markets.
These milestones support President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s long-term development strategy, targeting full electricity access, energy autonomy, and 40% renewables by 2030. Senegal is actively scaling up renewable initiatives to build a balanced, sustainable energy mix.
At AEW 2025, Minister Diop will present Senegal’s energy roadmap, emphasizing responsible resource development, sustainability, and investor-friendly policies. The event will serve as a key platform for global partners to engage with Senegal’s evolving energy landscape.
