Soventix Joins Renewable Energy Project to Power DRC’s Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine

German solar energy firm Soventix GmbH has officially joined a major renewable energy initiative aimed at powering the Kamoa-Kakula copper complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The company announced its involvement in the project on April 30, 2025, marking a significant step in its continued expansion across Africa.

Soventix will oversee planning, project management, and the supply of key components for the development of a large-scale solar and battery energy storage system.

The project is led by CrossBoundary Energy, a renewable energy developer focused on commercial and industrial clients in Africa. CrossBoundary will operate the facility, which was made possible following the recent signing of a power purchase agreement (PPA) between the firm and Kamoa Copper, the owner of the Kamoa-Kakula complex.

The renewable energy installation will consist of a 222 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, coupled with a 526 MWh battery storage system. Together, the system is designed to provide a stable 30 MW of continuous power to the mine, reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and enhancing energy reliability.

As one of Africa’s largest and most advanced mining projects, Kamoa-Kakula is expected to require approximately 240 MW of electricity once all three development phases and an on-site smelter are fully operational by 2026. The solar-plus-storage system will be a critical component of the mine’s strategy to diversify its energy sources and integrate clean, renewable power into its operations.

Soventix’s involvement underscores its growing presence in the African renewable energy market, with ongoing projects in Nigeria, Kenya, and Rwanda. The DRC venture represents a further commitment to supporting sustainable industrial development across the continent.

CrossBoundary Energy, backed by Norway’s development finance institution Norfund, continues to lead efforts in delivering tailored renewable solutions to energy-intensive industries throughout Africa.

This collaboration marks a pivotal step toward greener mining operations in the region, aligning with global trends in decarbonization and sustainable resource extraction.
