Abuja, Nigeria – The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has taken a major step to fast-track the country’s renewable energy drive with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the inauguration of the National Committee on Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, Innovation & Certification (NCREEIC).
The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology headquarters in Abuja, was led by ECN Director General Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi and the Honourable Minister, Chief Uche Nnaji, alongside key stakeholders from government, academia, the private sector, and international partners.
Committee to Drive Clean Energy Goals
The NCREEIC will serve as a central platform to coordinate Nigeria’s renewable energy transition. Its mandate focuses on four key areas:

Advancing innovation and research in solar, wind, hydro, and bioenergy solutions.

Strengthening collaboration between public and private stakeholders.

Promoting local content development to grow domestic industries.

Establishing internationally recognized standards and certifications for renewable energy technologies.
A Decisive Step Toward Energy Security
Dr. Abdullahi described the initiative as a “decisive step toward ensuring clean, affordable, and reliable energy access for all Nigerians.” He added that beyond energy access, the committee’s work will support job creation, industrial growth, and environmental sustainability.
Minister Nnaji emphasized that the NCREEIC aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places green energy at the heart of Nigeria’s long-term development strategy. “This positions Nigeria as a leader in renewable energy innovation and certification in the region,” he said.
Complementary Projects
The ECN also noted that existing initiatives—including the National Solarization Programme and the Clean Cooking Gas Initiative—will complement the committee’s mandate, further advancing Nigeria’s sustainable development and inclusive economic growth.
“This is a transformative journey toward a greener and more resilient Nigeria,” the ECN said in a statement, thanking all partners supporting the effort.
