The Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc (CEC), in collaboration with French renewable energy firm InnoVent SAS, is advancing two large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) projects with a combined capacity of 40 megawatts (MW) under Zambia’s Global Energy Transfer Feed-in Tariff (GETFiT) Solar PV Tender Program.
Originally awarded in 2019, the projects form part of the Zambian government’s broader strategy to diversify its energy mix and promote renewable energy as a sustainable alternative to hydropower. The initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing national energy security while reducing dependence on traditional fossil fuels.
Electricity generated from the two solar PV sites will be transmitted via a 33 kV overhead line stretching approximately 9.2 kilometers. The transmission line will connect directly to the ZESCO Mwambashi substation, located strategically along Kalulushi Road, enabling seamless integration into Zambia’s national electricity grid.
Once operational, the projects are expected to significantly improve the reliability and sustainability of power supply in the Copperbelt Province—an industrial and mining hub critical to Zambia’s economy.
The GETFiT program, supported by various international development partners, is central to Zambia’s renewable energy development goals. The inclusion of CEC and InnoVent’s projects in the initiative underscores the growing role of public-private partnerships in accelerating clean energy deployment across the country.
