City Centre Bahrain and Yellow Door Energy Illuminate a Sustainable Future with Solar Power Milestone
City Centre Bahrain, a premier destination for shopping, entertainment, and lifestyle experiences, has unveiled a transformative 4.7-megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power plant in collaboration with Yellow Door Energy, a leading renewable energy partner in the Middle East and Africa. This trailblazing project, supported by a Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA), enables a seamless shift to clean energy without upfront capital costs, underscoring Majid Al Futtaim’s unwavering commitment to sustainability.
The solar plant, spanning a massive 32,000 square meters, features over 8,700 state-of-the-art solar panels across rooftop, ground-mounted, and solar carport installations. With an anticipated annual output of 7.3 million kilowatt-hours (kWh), the project is poised to slash carbon emissions by 3,300 metric tons in its first year alone. Additionally, the solar carport provides shaded parking for 450 vehicles, offering much-needed respite during Bahrain’s blazing summers.
This initiative is part of Majid Al Futtaim’s ambitious 38-megawatt Master Services Agreement (MSA) with Yellow Door Energy, which includes solar installations at 18 malls across Bahrain, the UAE, and Oman. By embracing clean energy solutions, the project directly supports Bahrain’s target of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2060 and highlights the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) growing commitment to environmental stewardship.
Speaking on this groundbreaking achievement, Duaij Al Rumaihi, Mall Director at City Centre Bahrain, remarked:
“This solar power plant is a monumental step for City Centre Bahrain, reflecting our dedication to embedding sustainability into all aspects of our operations. Our collaboration with Yellow Door Energy is a powerful example of how partnerships can drive meaningful environmental change.”
Jeremy Crane, Group CEO of Yellow Door Energy, echoed this sentiment, stating:
“We are thrilled to partner with City Centre Bahrain on this pioneering project. It not only aligns with Bahrain’s Net Zero vision but also sets a benchmark for sustainable energy solutions in the retail sector. Together with Majid Al Futtaim, we are proud to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.”
This innovative solar initiative not only reduces City Centre Bahrain’s carbon footprint but also serves as an inspiring model for businesses across the region. It demonstrates that sustainability and profitability can coexist, paving the way for a cleaner and brighter future in the GCC and beyond.
