The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has officially begun drawing 10 megawatts (MW) of solar power from the Haske Solar Plant, located in the Challawa Industrial Cluster of Kano State.
The offtake arrangement follows a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between KEDCO and Haske Solar Company Ltd., a project developed by the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and managed by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI).
Nigeria’s Largest Grid-Connected Solar Facility
Commissioned in January 2023, the Haske Solar Plant is Nigeria’s largest grid-connected solar project, marking a major step in diversifying the country’s power mix.
The formal signing of the PPA took place in Abuja, with KEDCO’s MD/CEO, Dr. Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta, NSIA’s Executive Director of Portfolio Management, Mr. Tajudeen Datti Ahmed, and Future Energies Africa (FEA) Managing Director, Yusuf Yahaya, all in attendance.
Boosting Power Supply and Energy Transition
Dr. Jimeta hailed the agreement as a turning point for power distribution in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States:
“By integrating solar power into our supply mix, we are enhancing network efficiency while contributing to Nigeria’s energy transition goals.”
The 10MW from Haske will be routed through KEDCO’s Abattoir Injection Substation and supplied directly to industries in Challawa via the NBC 11kV and Ceramic 11kV feeders, helping to stabilize supply in one of Kano’s most critical industrial zones.
Driving Renewable Energy Adoption
The partnership represents a strategic milestone for Nigeria’s clean energy agenda. It reduces dependence on fossil fuels, strengthens electricity availability for industries, and supports the federal government’s push toward a sustainable, low-carbon energy future.
By embedding renewable energy into its supply structure, KEDCO is positioning itself as a frontrunner among Nigeria’s distribution companies in adopting innovative, climate-conscious solutions.
