Scatec ASA, a leading renewable energy provider, has successfully launched commercial operations for the first 60 MW of its 120 MW Mmadinare Solar Cluster in Botswana. This milestone marks Scatec’s first-ever power plant in the country, reinforcing its role in Africa’s clean energy transition.
The Mmadinare Solar Cluster is expected to produce over 200 GWh of electricity per year, enough to power tens of thousands of households while reducing over 100,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. The project operates under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Botswana Power Corporation, ensuring a steady and reliable source of renewable energy for the nation.
The remaining 60 MW is under construction and is projected to be completed by early 2026. Currently, Scatec owns 100% of the project, but it plans to bring in additional equity partners to enhance long-term investment and growth.
Leadership Insights
Terje Pilskog, CEO of Scatec, expressed enthusiasm about the achievement:
“We are very proud to achieve COD for the first phase of the solar power plant within budget, reinforcing our commitment to advancing renewable energy in the region.”
Alberto Gambacorta, EVP of Sub-Saharan Africa at Scatec, highlighted the project’s momentum:
“Moving from development to construction and now to commercial operation has been highly rewarding. We are now ramping up construction of the second phase and look forward to its completion in the beginning of next year.”
Why This Matters
Botswana, known for its vast solar potential with over 3,200 hours of sunshine per year, is rapidly expanding its renewable energy infrastructure. The Mmadinare Solar Cluster is a major step toward Botswana’s goal of achieving 15% renewable energy by 2030, reducing reliance on coal and boosting energy security.
With growing investments in solar power, Botswana is positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s green energy movement, supporting economic growth while tackling climate change.
