TOYO Launches 2GW Solar Cell Production in Ethiopia, Eyes Expansion to 4GW

TOYO Co., Ltd., a leading provider of solar energy solutions, has officially begun production at its newly established manufacturing facility in Ethiopia, marking a significant milestone in its global expansion strategy. Operations at the plant commenced in early April 2025, with the company set to deliver over 80 megawatts (MW) of solar cells to customers by the end of the month.

Production at the Ethiopian facility is expected to ramp up in May and June, reaching a steady monthly output of 150 to 200 MW. This move positions TOYO to better meet both external customer demand and the needs of its newly opened module assembly plant in Houston, Texas.

In response to strong market demand and internal capacity requirements, TOYO has announced plans to expand the Ethiopian plant’s nameplate capacity to 4 gigawatts (GW). This ambitious upgrade underscores the company’s commitment to scaling its renewable energy manufacturing capabilities worldwide.

“We’re encouraged by the strong global demand for solar power and are committed to delivering innovative, low-cost energy solutions,” said Junsei Ryu, Chairman and CEO of TOYO Co., Ltd. “The additional 2GW expansion in Ethiopia is a strategic step toward a transformative year of growth for TOYO in 2025.”

Strategic Manufacturing Diversification

The launch of the Ethiopian facility plays a crucial role in TOYO’s efforts to diversify its manufacturing footprint, reduce logistical dependencies, and tap into regional strengths such as an available skilled workforce and favorable production conditions.

This expansion not only supports TOYO’s goal of delivering sustainable energy solutions globally but also strengthens its supply chain resilience in the face of rising demand for clean energy infrastructure.

By investing in Ethiopia, TOYO reinforces its long-term strategy of building robust, globally integrated solar manufacturing hubs, while contributing to the economic development of emerging markets and accelerating the worldwide shift toward renewable energy.
